The Ferrari SF90 XX wasn’t initially part of the SF90 production plan, revealing its unexpected evolution. Despite being a near-1000bhp plug-in hybrid supercar, the original SF90 never fully resonated with customers in the way Ferrari’s lighter, more affordable mid-engine models did. In response, Ferrari decided to create the SF90 XX, marking the first time it used its exclusive XX program for a road-legal vehicle.

Ferrari’s XX series has long been reserved for its wealthiest customers, who receive track-only models like the FXX-K and 599XX. However, the SF90 XX, introduced as both a Stradale coupé and a Spider, is available to 1400 buyers—far more than any previous XX release. While it carries the prestigious XX badge, this road-legal version doesn’t include entry into Ferrari’s exclusive track-day program for VIP collectors. Instead, it offers a special-edition Ferrari designed to push the boundaries of its SF90 predecessor.

The SF90 XX packs an additional 30bhp, pushing its hybrid powertrain (featuring a twin-turbo V8 and three electric motors) to new limits. This power boost comes from design tweaks like higher compression pistons and a more powerful battery. The upgraded aerodynamic package includes front and rear diffusers, larger vortex generators, wheel-arch louvres, and a fixed rear wing—Ferrari’s first since the F50 in 1995. Together, these changes generate a staggering 540kg of downforce at 155mph for the coupé and 530kg for the Spider, offering near-racecar handling for the road.

Inside, the SF90 XX features carbon fiber throughout, including bucket seats, dashboard, and door consoles. The carpets have been replaced by bare aluminum footwells, and the car sacrifices the frunk space for the radiator upgrades. Ferrari’s steering wheel remains busy, crowding multiple controls, but overall ergonomics are solid. Cabin space is decent, though taller drivers might feel cramped wearing a helmet in the coupé.

On the track, the SF90 XX is blazingly fast, combining its fiery V8 with instant electric torque for a brutal yet seamless driving experience. Ferrari has improved the engine note and gearshifts for a more savage feel, but the real standout is the car’s downforce, which ensures stability and grip in high-speed corners. However, the XX’s handling demands precision—it rewards disciplined driving but can become tricky when pushed too hard in tight turns.

On the road, the SF90 XX shows off its versatility, offering an engaging and comfortable ride even on rough surfaces. The Spider, with its retractable roof, adds an extra layer of drama with increased engine noise and open-air exhilaration. Despite the stiffened chassis and aerodynamic focus, the XX maintains impressive ride comfort, making it as suitable for winding roads as it is for the track.

In short, the SF90 XX is an enhanced, more extreme version of the standard SF90, designed to appeal to those seeking a meaner, faster supercar. While it might not possess the pure handling finesse of other Ferrari models like the 296 GTB, it stands as a dynamic and powerful beast—a road-legal tribute to Ferrari’s legendary XX series.
