Intrepid Adventuresses

Many names of adventurous women travellers have been lost to time, and the first female adventurers were brave women who defied convention to embark on breathtaking voyages. Some of the most prominent female adventurers of the 19th century, and there were not many of them, even had to disguise their gender and dress as men. They were all pioneers! Alexander David-Neel, Gertrude Bell, Jeanne Barre are some of the names that come to mind.

Today there is a new generation of adventurous women who test the limits of humanity, break world records and inspire those who come after them and discover more about themselves through travel.

Anamaria Chediak (Ecuador) and Maricruz Sainz de Aja (Mexico) are artists who travel the world with their cameras. It takes commitment, creativity and courage to excel in this field of high-octane photography and she has all these qualities.

Anamaria was born in Quito, Ecuador. Anamaria studied in Boston and specialized in photography in Madrid. She has dedicated herself to her great passion, photography, since 1993, dividing her time between artistic and editorial projects. Her lens knows no boundaries, capturing the essence of diverse cultures and animal life around the world has been the inspiration for her photography. Her most outstanding projects have been her books: Galapagos: Life & Evolution, Africa, Bloom, Ethos and El Escondrijo del Toro in which she has put together magnificent collections of images.

Maricruz was born in Mexico City, lives in Miami, loves books and animals, her artistic focus and commitment to photography is to show the world through her lens the extreme diversity and infinite beauty and fragility of our environment in order to impact on people’s conscience and thus respect and preserve our cultural heritage and our planet.

Both photographers, who have received international recognition for their work, do not know each other but admire each other’s work. They are two exceptional, empathetic and generous human beings who are pushing the boundaries of art and exploration, and encourage younger women photographers to take their example to the streets.

Metaphore pays tribute to them by showing a selection of their extraordinary photos chosen by them.
