Katy Perry stole the show at the MTV VMAs 2024, not only by receiving the prestigious MTV Video Vanguard Award but also with her stunning performance and heartfelt moment with Orlando Bloom.
Returning to the music scene with a bang, Perry took a break from her career to focus on family but made a triumphant comeback with her new album, 143. At the VMAs, she was celebrated for her significant impact on the music industry with the Video Vanguard Award.
Joining a select group of past winners like Rihanna, Pink, Jennifer Lopez, Missy Elliott, Nicki Minaj, and Shakira, Perry received the honor from Shakira, the previous year’s recipient.
Her performance was a highlight of the night, featuring a medley of her greatest hits such as “California Gurls,” “Dark Horse,” “Firework,” “Roar,” “ET,” “I Kissed a Girl,” and “Teenage Dream,” along with new singles “Lifetimes” and “I’m His, He’s Mine.”
Perry’s act began with her suspended in the air, simulating weightlessness. She danced and sang while floating above the stage, before landing to perform a new song with Doechii. The futuristic dance team added to the spectacle, and Perry later appeared with giant wings, engaging warmly with her applauding fans.
During the award presentation, Perry received the Video Vanguard Award from her husband, Orlando Bloom. She expressed gratitude to her label, fans, and the LGBTQ+ community, and humorously noted she achieved this “on the first day of my period.”
In her emotional speech, Perry highlighted the importance of mental health, reflecting on the pressures and noise that artists face, particularly women. Bruce Gillmer, the VMAs executive producer, praised Perry as “a musical powerhouse and a true pop culture icon,” acknowledging the profound influence she has had since her breakthrough in the 2010s.
