The iconic French fashion house Givenchy has made a significant announcement.
British designer Sarah Burton has been appointed as the creative director, effective immediately. After a distinguished 26-year career at the British brand Alexander McQueen, Ms. Burton will take on the challenge of defining the future of Givenchy and will present her first collection for the house in March 2025.
Alessandro Valenti, CEO of Givenchy, commented: “Sarah Burton’s arrival as the head of our creative design is a very exciting moment for Givenchy. Her exceptional career and creative vision have already earned her a large following, and we are confident that, under her leadership, Givenchy will continue to innovate and captivate a global audience.”
“I look forward to the new creative energy Sarah will bring as she works alongside our outstanding teams in our exceptional ateliers, as we embark on this new chapter in Givenchy’s history,” added Valenti.
Next Steps at Givenchy
Primarily known for her role as creative director at Alexander McQueen, a position she took over after the death of founder Lee Alexander McQueen in 2010, Ms. Burton is now exploring new terrain.
According to an LVMH statement, the Manchester-born designer and Central Saint Martins graduate will guide the creative direction of all Givenchy’s women’s and men’s collections from now on.
“It is a great honor to join the beautiful house of Givenchy; it is a jewel,” said Ms. Burton. “I am very excited to write the next chapter in the history of this iconic house and bring to Givenchy my own vision, sensitivity, and beliefs.”
During her time as creative director of Alexander McQueen, Ms. Burton received numerous accolades, including designing the wedding dress for Kate, the Princess of Wales, for her marriage to Prince William in 2011. The following year, she was awarded the Order of the British Empire for her contributions to fashion.
Now, Burton arrives at Givenchy to fill the position left by American designer Matthew Williams in December, following a three-year tenure at the prestigious atelier.
As she prepares for her upcoming collection, Givenchy will offer a pre-spring 2025 collection in stores and online starting next month.
Sidney Toledano, Chairman of the Givenchy Board, stated: “Sarah Burton is an exceptional creative talent whose work I have passionately followed for many years; I am delighted she is joining Givenchy today. Her unique vision and approach to fashion will be invaluable to this iconic Maison, known for its boldness and haute couture. I am confident that her creative leadership will contribute to the future success and international prestige of the house.”
