Elon Musk continues to top the list of The World’s 10 Richest People (September 2024), while fluctuations in tech stocks have led to significant shifts among other members of the top 10. Larry Ellison dropped one spot, and Bill Gates surpassed the Google co-founders, climbing two positions.
For the second consecutive month, the volatility in tech stocks has altered more than half of the names on the list of the world’s richest people. Mark Zuckerberg, CEO of Meta, regained the fourth position, swapping places with Larry Ellison. Warren Buffett overtook Larry Page, Google’s co-founder, and Bill Gates ascended to the seventh spot, surpassing both Google co-founders by midnight on September 1.
Elon Musk remains firmly in first place, with an estimated fortune of $243.7 billion, $3 billion more than the previous month, thanks to an increase in SpaceX’s valuation. Musk recently made headlines for harshly criticizing a Brazilian Supreme Court judge after the freezing of the bank accounts of his satellite internet company, Starlink, which led Brazilian regulators to shut down X on August 30.
The biggest beneficiary in the past month was Zuckerberg, whose fortune grew by nearly $14 billion, reaching $180.5 billion, due to a 9% increase in Meta Platforms’ stock. This surge placed him ahead of Oracle’s chairman, Larry Ellison, in the fourth position. Zuckerberg and Ellison have swapped places multiple times this year.
In contrast, Jeff Bezos, Amazon’s chairman, suffered the most significant loss among this elite group, with his fortune shrinking by $7.8 billion to $197 billion due to a decline in Amazon’s stock. Despite this loss, Bezos remained in second place, but the gap between Musk and Bezos widened to nearly $47 billion on September 1, up from $36 billion in early August.
Gates’ rise to seventh place—from ninth in August—was partly due to a drop in Alphabet’s stock price, the parent company of Google, which reduced Larry Page and Sergey Brin’s fortunes by more than $6 billion each. They now occupy the eighth and ninth spots, respectively.
Collectively, the world’s ten richest people hold a fortune of $1.66 trillion, an increase of $31 billion compared to the previous month.
