Kennedy Jr. to lead the Department of Health and Human Services (HHS), critics predicted chaos and supporters hoped for change. More than eighteen months after he was sworn in, in February 2025, few can deny that Kennedy has done what Washington health secretaries rarely manage: he has moved the national conversation. Under the banner of Make America Healthy Again (MAHA), he has put chronic disease, the food Americans eat and the influence of big industry at the centre of federal health policy.

(Photo illustration)

Kennedy’s starting point has always been simple. Americans are sicker than they should be. Obesity, diabetes, heart disease and other chronic conditions account for the vast majority of the nation’s health spending, and more than one in five American children is now obese. For decades, he argues, federal policy treated the symptoms and ignored the causes.

Within hours of his swearing-in, the President signed an executive order creating the MAHA Commission. It was tasked with finding the root causes of the crisis, with children’s health first. The Commission brought every Cabinet department together, and in 2025 it published the Make Our Children Healthy Again Strategy, with more than 120 policy recommendations. For the first time in a generation, the federal government was asking why so many young Americans are unwell, rather than simply how to medicate them.

The clearest sign of change came in January 2026, when Kennedy and Agriculture Secretary Brooke Rollins released the Dietary Guidelines for Americans 2025–2030. Their message was blunt: eat real food. The new guidelines, and a redesigned food pyramid, put protein, dairy, vegetables, fruit, healthy fats and whole grains at the heart of the diet. They also warn Americans, for the first time, to cut back on highly processed foods, added sugars and refined carbohydrates. It is the most significant reset of federal nutrition advice in decades.

Kennedy has gone after what goes into food, too. In April 2025 he announced a plan to phase out petroleum-based synthetic dyes. Since then, 27 of the largest food companies in America have committed to removing them, the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has approved new natural colours as alternatives, and 38 states have introduced or passed their own restrictions on dyes and additives. Walmart, General Mills, Kellogg and most of the US ice cream industry have set deadlines to follow suit.

In August 2026 his department took aim at one of the oldest weaknesses in American food safety: the “generally recognised as safe” (GRAS) rule. For decades it has let companies add new ingredients to food without telling the government. A proposed rule would now require them to notify the FDA. Even long-time critics of the administration welcomed the move. At the same time, HHS and the Department of Agriculture submitted the first-ever federal definition of ultra-processed food for final review. That definition could eventually shape labelling, school meals and hospital food.

The reforms reach the family shopping basket as well. Twenty-three states have been approved to stop the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP), the federal food-aid scheme, from paying for soda and sweets, so that taxpayer money goes towards nourishing food.

Kennedy has made children his priority. In March 2025 he launched Operation Stork Speed to strengthen the safety and resilience of the nation’s infant formula supply. It includes more testing for heavy metals and the first full review of formula nutrients since 1998. He has also pushed for more nutrition training in medical schools, so that the next generation of doctors can talk to patients about diet as confidently as they write prescriptions.

Kennedy’s agenda is not only about food. Working with the President, HHS has made lower drug prices a central pillar of its health plan. Through the new TrumpRx platform, Americans can now reach more than 800 brand-name and generic medicines at “most favoured nation” prices, matching what other wealthy countries pay. HHS says patients have already saved more than $700 million. Low-income patients at federally funded health centres can now get insulin and emergency epinephrine at cost. New price-transparency rules also let patients compare prescription costs and find cheaper alternatives before they reach the pharmacy counter.

Kennedy has long argued that public trust in health agencies must be earned, not demanded. He was a prominent critic of the pandemic response led by Dr Anthony Fauci. In his bestselling book The Real Anthony Fauci, he argued that lockdowns and mandates went too far and that dissenting scientists were pushed aside. As secretary, he has championed informed consent and individual choice. He has insisted that the risks of medical products, such as the rare cases of heart inflammation in young men after mRNA COVID-19 vaccination, should be discussed openly rather than played down. That approach has brought him into open conflict with parts of the medical establishment. His reform of the federal vaccine advisory committee and his review of the childhood immunisation schedule are now being fought over in the courts, and a federal court has blocked five of the state SNAP restrictions. Kennedy’s supporters see this resistance as proof of how deeply entrenched the old system is, and of how much his reforms threaten it.

What began as a slogan has become a national movement. MAHA summits now draw thousands, state legislatures across the political spectrum are passing their own food reforms, and major food companies are reformulating products they have sold unchanged for decades. The message that health begins with what we eat, and that families deserve honest information, is being heard well beyond America’s borders.

There is still work to do. Many industry commitments are voluntary, several reforms are still in the rulemaking process, and his opponents remain determined. But Robert F. Kennedy Jr. has already done something few expected: he has made the health of ordinary Americans, and especially their children, the first question in Washington rather than the last. If his reforms continue to take hold, the result could be a healthier future not only for America but for the world.

https://www.whitehouse.gov/maha

Lorsque le président Donald Trump a choisi Robert F.
