The same corrosive force is now visible even within our own families and communities. At the root of this deterioration lies the reckless influence of a small number of billionaire technology magnates, aided by their legal and financial entourages, certain opportunistic politicians, and a media landscape too often willing to turn scandal into spectacle and irresponsibility into notoriety.

Until relatively recently, behaviour of this nature — regularly displayed online and across television networks — would have provoked a swift and decisive rejection from public opinion. Those who sought to manipulate or distort civic discourse were swiftly removed from positions of influence. Today, however, many such figures occupy the highest offices of government in their respective countries, if those administrations can still be described as governments in any meaningful sense. Media outlets that amplify their narratives are frequently sustained by public subsidies that bear little relation to their civic value, while the very tycoons whose actions contribute to this disorder sit comfortably on the boards of the world’s most powerful corporations.

How did we arrive at such a point?

The starting signal was sounded by the global financial crisis of 2008 and the severe socio-economic dislocation that followed in its wake. The past fifteen years have created the fertile ground upon which the very actors responsible for that upheaval have returned to positions of influence — often under new guises and through new mechanisms of control.

The unchecked expansion of social media, the pervasive intrusion of technological systems into daily life, the elevation of individualism above collective responsibility, the culture of relentless self-imposed productivity, the gradual erosion of community bonds, the dominance of short-term thinking, declining cultural literacy, and a form of environmental self-destruction that borders on collective suicide — all these forces have converged to shape the present moment.

This is not the place to analyse each of these causes in depth. What is required now is not merely diagnosis but an emergency remedy — one capable of halting the present deterioration and, in time, guiding us back toward a healthier path.

That remedy can be summarised in a single word: community.

The cohesion of societies and the reduction of inequality must begin with the strengthening of the communities that form the fabric of our villages, towns, and cities. The origin of this process of consolidation lies in the networks created through neighbourhood associations, local districts, sporting clubs, professional groups, and consumer organisations. It is within these civic structures that democracy must be renewed — through the discussion of the issues that matter to each sphere of life, and through collective deliberation and voting.

For this to happen, we must reclaim time for civic participation. We must consciously resist the domination of screens and the culture of relentless hyper-productivity that increasingly governs both our homes and our workplaces. A society cannot truly progress unless the communities that sustain it progress together.

Education must be a central pillar of this effort. Primary and secondary schools should be shared institutions for all children and young people within each local community, equipped with excellent resources and supported by highly competent teaching staff. Public universities should be free and generously funded, allowing intellectual life to flourish. Private education, where it exists, should be limited to very specific and specialised areas of interest. The same principle should apply to healthcare: strong, universal public systems must form the foundation.

Political parties themselves must adhere to rigorous standards of internal democracy. Debate, transparency, and the open formulation of proposals must replace caesarism and the culture of personal loyalty to power structures or individual figures. Old-boy networks must be dismantled. Public decision-making should only occur where information is fully accessible and voting processes are transparent.

Public sector salaries should be strengthened in order to attract and retain capable professionals committed to the common good. Taxation, meanwhile, must focus more directly on extreme concentrations of wealth. Billionaires should be taxed on both assets and income, and the perpetuation of inherited dynastic wealth must be reconsidered. Multinational corporations must also be subject to fair and effective taxation through coordinated international frameworks — ideally at the level of the OECD or broader supranational institutions — with no exceptions and with a meaningful minimum rate applied universally.

If we begin to move collectively in this direction, the destructive forces that have come to dominate our public life — those monstrous distortions of civic responsibility and economic balance — will gradually lose their power.

It is within our reach to make this possible.

[11
5154,5151,5155,5153,5150,5152
0":"post-65391","1":"post","2":"type-post","3":"status-publish","4":"format-standard","5":"has-post-thumbnail","7":"category-opinion-politics","8":"tag-civilization","9":"tag-conundrum","10":"tag-globalwave","11":"tag-paradox","12":"tag-philosophy","13":"tag-xxicentury
["GET
